David Hyde Pierce was born, in New York, to Laura Marie. His father George Hyde Pierce, was an insurance agent and aspiring actor. He has three siblings, two elder sisters named Barbara and Nancy, and an elder brother, Thomas. Acting was not his first love and in his childhood, he became interested in Piano and used to play organ at the local Bethesda Episcopal Church in Saratoga Springs. He was the best Dramatic Arts student during his high school years. He started acting but was still crazy for music so he attended Yale University to study classical Piano. But very soon, he got fed up with long classes and it became clear to him that it’s not possible for him to practice for the required amount of hours so he left the plan of becoming a successful concert pianist. In 1981, he graduated in two different streams- English and Theatre Arts. After graduation, he moved to New York City to pursue his acting career.
In early 1990s, he landed a role in ‘The Powers That Be‘, as Theodore, a Congressman. As he resembles to Kelsey Grammer (Dr. Frasier on ‘Frasier), so he was chosen to portray Niles Crane, his younger brother. David was nominated for several Emmy awards as a Best Supporting Actor and he won the award in 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2004. He earned US$ 1 million per episode from this very popular series.
His movie credits are: ‘Little Man Tate‘, ‘Nixon’, ‘Down with Love’. He also voiced several animated characters on various TV shows. In 2005, he played a role in the stage production ‘Spamalot’. In 2006, he was seen in ‘Curtains’, a new Kander and Ebb musical at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA. He has won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his role in ‘Curtains’. In 2007, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Niagara University, New York.
